| Periodontal disease |
||||||||
| Periodontal disease is an infection of the tissues that support the teeth, including gingivitis and periodontitis. Dental plaques are the main cause for periodontal disease. In the early stage of the disease, inflammations, swell, bearable pain and bleeding upon brushing occur at gum tissues. When teeth are not cleaned properly, dental plaque accumulates on the tooth surface and the gaps around the gingivae. Dental plaque accumulated around the gingivae secrets toxins that cause infection of periodontal tissue. After a while, the pit and fissure between the tooth root and gingivae will deepen, resulting in a periodontal pocket. Consequently, this results in gingivitis and breakdown of alveolar bone and causes symptoms like drainage or pus, foul breath, or loose teeth, which is known as periodontitis. Patients with periodontal disease are 3-times more likely to suffer from myocardial infarction and stroke. For those who also suffer from diabetes, blood sugar control is difficult when periodontal disease is controlled poorly. Pregnant women who have periodontal disease are 7-times more likely to suffer from premature delivery or low birth weight. For periodontal disease patients living in nursing homes who are bed-bound, the risk for aspiration pneumonia is much higher. (Man-Ying Wong, Periodontology, National Taiwan University Hospital) No sexual preference is observed in terms of periodontal disease incidence. The prevalence is about 60% between the age of 20 and 39; 70% between the age of 40 and49; and 80% among people over 50. In the past, aging was regarded as the cause for teeth to fall off. In fact, periodontal disease also contributes significantly to the falling off of the teeth. Among the people between 65 and 74, 40% of their natural teeth has fallen off and have to wear denture; it is mostly due to periodontal disease. Dental plaque is formed from aggregations of bacteria. To keep teeth clean is a key to the disease prevention. |
